Tech Tip #1 / Feb 1st

How is your internet connection?

The Internet is one of those things that at some times can be a mystery, even to an experienced computer nerd this situation can make you draw blanks. however, there are some reasons as to why your connection could be severely lacking.

#1: Your home

One of the more obvious reasons for slow internet may be that there are obstructions between your router and your device, but it may not be as simple as that. Of course metal and walls would interfere with your connection, but you distance from the router, people connected, and if you have neighbors who share the same service provider, that also can slow your connection down.

Some things you can try if anything here seems like a potential problem:
-move your router or computer to a more central part of your home, or closer to your computer. make sure there are no                 machines blocking your router, like an air conditioner or furnace.

-disconnect some extra devices. This includes other computers not currently being used, phones or tablets or perhaps a                 printer could be drawing from your router.

-use an ethernet cord, this only applies to computers and larger device, some printers and DVD players, even Xboxes and               play stations can have ethernet ports.

-for a final solution in this section, switch service providers. some service providers wont work as well as others, this mainly             depends on if your are far away from the providers towers, in which case maybe satellite internet would work better.

#2: Your device

The more unlikely issue you may be having is your device having independent issues. Some reasons this could even happen would be related to outdated software or hardware, meaning your computer or phone hasn’t been updated in quite awhile. Whether that is because your device is old and no longer receives updates, or the automatic update setting is turned off, is something we will navigate through in this section.

Solutions to these issues:

-check your drivers, this is through the device manager, and searching for “network adaptors”. there you can check and                  update your drivers.

-turn it off and on again. although this is something you’ve probably heard a million times, it can solve a multitude of issues            when it comes to software and even hardware in some cases, this works because it forces the device to go back                              through its startup in case it messed something up on your initial boot, or if you’ve installed new software it may need to                restart your computer to work.

-hard reset your device, this will erase every file on your device except your OS. This will reset your settings and potentially              fix any bugs that were previously present. make sure you save important file to a cloud or SSD before resetting.

#3: Other

If you tried the previous suggestions and still don’t have a strong connection, your router or satellite could be the basis for the problem. A slow router will halt your connection, and if your are using an old satellite then that also could be and issue.

Solutions:

-buy a new router, Asus sells some decent router, and usually your router that you receive from your internet provider wont           be sufficient especially if you have multiple people in your home or do a lot of streaming and gaming. with that in mind,                 remember that you get what you pay for, spending fifty dollars on a router instead of a hundred dollar one, you wont be               getting a substantial difference from the original router.

-check on your dish if you have one, it may be old or damaged. some dished can be hard to replace but contacting your                 service provider could help as they may be responsible for replacing it.

If all else fails, take your PC in and get it checked by a local tech store, ask them questions and explain your situation, they will most likely be able to assist you. Or contact your service provider to find out why this is happening.
